My Heroic Journey: Hitching a Ride to Hpa-An
After my visit to Bago, I decided to take a bus to Thaton, hoping to connect onward to Hpa-An. Little did I know that my journey would take an unexpected turn. While waiting at the Thaton bus station, I started to wonder if I’d have to spend the night there. Just as hope was dwindling, a Burmese man stopped a passing truck, spoke to the driver, and gestured for me to climb aboard.
With no better options, I hopped onto the back of the truck, which was packed with sacks of unknown goods and a fellow passenger lounging comfortably. Exhausted from the day, I fell asleep to the hum of the road, unsure of my destination. When I awoke, I found myself in Hpa-An—safe, sound, and ready to explore its unreal landscapes! While hitchhiking isn’t the most conventional method, it turned out to be a story-worthy adventure that added an unexpected thrill to my trip.

Where to Rent a Motorbike in Hpa-An? A Convenient Way to Explore the Surrounding Attractions
While Hpa-An itself is small, many of the must-see spots are located in nearby villages, making a motorbike or scooter the perfect way to get around. I visited a couple of rental spots: Lucky and Soe Brothers. At Lucky, a popular restaurant, renting a scooter for the day would cost 8000 MMK. The other option was Soe Brothers, which had a rental shop located below the guesthouse. The price was the same, but the scooters there were in better condition, and the friendly staff made me feel welcome. So, I decided to rent from Soe Brothers to hit the road and discover Hpa-An’s hidden gems.
Day 1 in Hpa-An: A Relaxing Start to My 2-Day Adventure
I woke up feeling a bit tired. I guess I preferred sleeping over sacks than on a prober bed lol—definitely a memorable experience! After a good night’s rest, I was ready to kick off my 2-day itinerary in Hpa-An. Luckily, breakfast was included in the room price, so I made my way to the dining area. Within minutes, the friendly staff brought me a huge and delicious breakfast to start my day. Here’s what it looked like:
Zwe Lin Thaya: Exploring Hidden Gems Near Hpa-An
Hpa-An’s countryside is home to numerous fascinating attractions, and one of the most unexpected finds during my 2-day itinerary in Hpa-An was Zwe Lin Thaya. My journey began with plans to visit Yathaypyan Cave (also known as Yathet Pyan Cave), but something caught my eye as I was driving along. On the left side of the road, I saw a snake-like formation, which reminded me of the iconic snake from Dragon Ball. I couldn’t resist stopping to take a closer look. The snake’s length was so impressive, it seemed to stretch as long as the one our beloved hero must cross to reach King Kai’s house. And no, I’m not exaggerating!
Zwe Lin Thaya or King Kai’s Planet?
I continued my ride until I reached the entrance to a Buddhist temple. Here, I found a stupa in the center of the area, surrounded by a peaceful atmosphere. In addition to the temple, there was a building that appeared to be a school, and nearby, I discovered beautiful ponds and stunning mountain views. These mountains, with their unique and picturesque shapes, combined with a small palace-like structure, created a surreal landscape. The whole scene was breathtaking. Here’s a glimpse of what I saw:
A Chance Encounter with a Monk
I spent some time walking around, completely in awe of the natural beauty surrounding me. It was a hot day, but the serenity of the place made it unforgettable. After taking in so much stunning scenery, I decided to head back to my scooter and retrace my route. However, just before I left, a Buddhist monk emerged from the school. Nervously, I asked him if he spoke English, and when he nodded, I could hardly contain my excitement! Although I didn’t get his name (regrettably), the monk was incredibly kind, and we spent some time chatting. He was 31, though he appeared much younger, and had been a monk for nine years. During our conversation, I shared my interest in meditation and Buddhism, which brought a smile to his face.
Exploring the Monastery at Zwe Lin Thaya: A Glimpse into Monastic Life
He then invited me to visit the monastery, where I had the opportunity to explore the school and see monks studying, though the number of students was smaller than at Kyakhatwine Monastery in Bago. The monk explained their daily routine: they wake up around 4:00 AM for meditation and prayers and then go out to beg for food, before repeating the cycle. This routine seemed similar to the one at Kyakhatwine and likely at many other Buddhist temples. As we were talking, the sound of a bell rang through the air, signalling shower time. I watched as the young monks hurried to prepare for their showers. After bidding my new friend farewell, I got back on my scooter to continue my journey, ready to tackle the “snake” once again.
From Zwe Lin Thaya to Yathaypyan Cave: A Scenic Journey Through Hpa-An’s Countryside
Some travellers call it Yathaypyan Cave, while others refer to it as Yathet Pyan Cave, but no matter the name, this spot is a must-visit in your Hpa-An itinerary. After an unexpected but delightful stop at Zwe Lin Thaya, I set out for my second destination of the day: the stunning Yathaypyan Cave. Hpa-An was quickly becoming one of my favourite places during my 3 weeks in Myanmar, thanks to its surreal landscapes, impressive limestone mountains, and breathtaking caves and pagodas.
For Those Who Miss Karst Formations
The distance from Zwe Lin Thaya to Yathaypyan Cave is only a few kilometres, but those kilometres were filled with some of the most awe-inspiring views I’ve ever seen. And trust me, this comes from someone who had explored Australia, Indonesia, and the Philippines before arriving in Myanmar. Driving my scooter through the lush countryside of Hpa-An, I couldn’t help but feel like I had entered another world. One of the highlights of this route was crossing the Salween River bridge. The scenery was so mesmerizing that I stopped on the “safe” side of the bridge to soak in the panoramic views.
As I drove further, the towering limestone mountains reminded me of the stunning karst formations I saw in Palawan (the Philippines) and Thailand. If you have ever seen these unique green-and-black rock formations, you’ll agree with me that they leave a lasting impression on you. Here’s a glimpse of what I saw:
The journey to Yathaypyan Cave was a feast for the eyes, with the scenery constantly shifting but always captivating. The midday heat prompted me to stop at a roadside shop for water, where I exchanged a few friendly words with the welcoming Burmese mother and her child. This small interaction, like so many others in Myanmar, made the experience even more special.
Finally, I arrived at Yathaypyan Cave, where I paid 500 MMK for parking and walked to the cave’s entrance. Before heading inside, I took a photo to help future visitors identify the spot. While I couldn’t uncover much historical information about Yathaypyan Cave, the experience was still captivating. If you’re a traveller who loves delving into local culture and history, hiring a guide in Hpa-An might be worth considering. But even without a guide, I found myself mesmerized by the breathtaking panoramic views from the cave’s entrance. The surrounding landscape, with its verdant limestone karsts and lush greenery, seemed almost surreal—like a scene from a dream. It’s hard to put into words just how perfect it was.
Deeper inside the cave, I stumbled upon a surprising encounter—a centipede, which a local warned me was dangerous. Carefully moving past, I continued exploring the surprisingly spacious interior until I discovered a wooden staircase leading to a viewpoint atop the cave. The views from there were simply unforgettable, showcasing the raw beauty of Hpa-An’s countryside. After spending time soaking in the incredible sights, I made my way back to the cave entrance, taking one last moment to appreciate its serene charm. Heading down the steps to retrieve my scooter, I set off for my next destination: Kawgun Cave.
Kawgun Cave: Ancient Buddha Carvings and Astonishing Views
Kawgun Cave, located just a short ride from Yathet Pyan Cave, is another must-visit gem during your 2 days in Hpa-An. Unlike Yathet Pyan Cave, Kawgun Cave charges a small 3000 MMK entrance fee, but it is absolutely worth it. As part of your Hpa-An itinerary, this ancient cave, dating back to the 7th century, offers not only cultural insights but also awe-inspiring views. According to one legend, it was commissioned by a Mon Queen, making the cave a sacred pilgrimage site for the Mon ethnic group. Another version of the story attributes the cave’s creation to King Manuaha, who sought sanctuary there after being defeated.
Kawgun Cave’s 10000 Buddhas
If you’re wondering what to do during your 2-day Hpa-An itinerary, Kawgun Cave should definitely be on your list. One of its most famous features is the thousands of Buddha carvings adorning the towering cave walls. Some say there are exactly 10000 Buddha carvings here. While I didn’t count them all, I can assure you that the sight of these delicate and ancient sculptures is breathtaking. Here’s what you can expect to see:
The Buddha statues inside Kawgun Cave are incredibly well-preserved, offering a variety of poses, ages, and expressions. These intricately carved figures are complemented by a mix of larger Buddha statues scattered throughout the cave. But be careful – the cave is also home to several mischievous monkeys, so keep your belongings close!
One of the most impressive features of Kawgun Cave is its massive Buddha carvings, which stretch from the floor to the ceiling of the cave. Unlike Yathet Pyan Cave, Kawgun Cave offers a more adventurous experience, with hundreds of stairs leading to a stunning viewpoint at the top. I decided to challenge myself and climb all the way up. My fitness wasn’t great, but the breathtaking views from the summit made every step worth it. After soaking in the beauty, I descended back to the cave’s entrance, feeling grateful for this hidden treasure in Hpa-An, Myanmar. Thai Food Around Hpa-An: A Taste of Thailand Near the Myanmar Border
Thanks to its proximity to Thailand, Hpa-An offers a surprising variety of Thai restaurants, making it a great destination for those craving delicious Thai dishes. After leaving Kawgun Cave, I was in the mood for some authentic Thai food. While cruising on my scooter through the scenic roads, I stumbled upon a small Thai restaurant tucked away by the roadside. Despite the place being a little empty, I decided to give it a try. I ordered a refreshing Singha beer for 900 MMK and a delicious plate of fried vermicelli for just 2000 MMK – a bargain for such tasty food! It was a perfect spot to enjoy a simple yet satisfying meal.
While eating, I noticed a man sitting nearby, enjoying his own meal. We struck up a conversation, and it turned out he was a local tour guide. His English was great, and he began telling me about moonshine and a local beverage called “sky beer”, which is made from palm trees. I wasn’t sure why he brought up these drinks, but after chatting for a while, we both left the restaurant and continued our journeys. As luck would have it, shortly after parting ways, I came across a small booth where an elderly couple was selling this very sky beer. They were kind enough to offer me a taste, and while it wasn’t exactly my favourite, it was a unique experience I won’t forget!
Kyauk Ka Lat Pagoda: A Must-See Attraction in Hpa-An, Myanmar, and the whole world!
Have I ever mentioned in this post that Hpa-An is beautiful, stunning, astonishing or breathtaking? This is the beauty of travelling, when you think nothing else can surprise you in terms of beauty… boom! The next stop of the day is even more beautiful than the previous one. And that’s what happened to me during my first day discovering the magical Hpa-An.
Enjoying the Garden of Eden at Kyauk Ka Lat Pagoda
The 4th stop of my 2 days in Hpa-An was undeniably one of the highlights of my trip—and truly one of the most remarkable experiences of my life. I had never seen anything like this before. Hpa-An is known for its surreal beauty, and Kyauk Ka Lat Pagoda is a perfect example of what makes this region so special. This Buddhist temple is built on top of a stunning limestone rock formation, which stands in the middle of a serene artificial lake. However, the lake looks anything but artificial, adding to the unique charm of the area.
From the moment I started driving towards the pagoda, I was in awe of the breathtaking sight unfolding before me. It truly felt like something out of a dream! While the pagoda and the lake are undoubtedly the main attractions, there’s also a grand temple right in front of the lake. Behind the lake rises the majestic Mount Zwegabin, which I hiked the following day. Nearby, you’ll find tea shops, souvenir stalls, and food vendors, making it a perfect place to take a break and soak in the atmosphere.
The temple was relatively quiet, and I decided to meditate for a while, soaking in the peaceful energy. After some time, I ventured outside to further immerse myself in the mesmerizing beauty surrounding the area. Words simply can’t do justice to the grandeur of the scene, so instead of trying to describe it further, I’ll just show you the magic through these photos.

A Closer Look at Kyauk Ka Lat Pagoda and its Surrounding Beauty
There was a wooden footbridge leading up to the pagoda, and without thinking, I found myself walking across it, almost as if my body was moving on its own. I couldn’t resist getting a closer look at the magnificent temple. The pagoda and its surroundings are home to an active community of monks, so it was easy to spot them as I approached the entrance of Kyauk Ka Lat Pagoda.
The entrance to Kyauk Ka Lat Pagoda is free, so as soon as I arrived, I started walking up the steps towards the temple. I made it halfway (as you can see in the picture above) when a staff member kindly informed me that I couldn’t go any further. It turns out the upper part of the pagoda is reserved exclusively for monks. At that point, I was also asked not to take any photos. The atmosphere in this part of the pagoda was serene, allowing visitors to admire the surroundings and offer prayers in silence.
Kyauk Ka Lat Pagoda: Spiritual and Natural Wonders Combined
As I stood there, soaking in the views, a monk approached me, gave me an orange bracelet and said to me: “lucky”. It was a moment that added to the deeply spiritual experience of the place 🙂 Walking back down, I encountered female Buddhist monks for the first time in my life. They wore distinctive pink robes, which made them easy to spot. The presence of both male and female monks added to the sense of calm and spiritual energy around Kyauk Ka Lat Pagoda. It was such a peaceful experience, and I felt privileged to witness it.
Mount Zwegabin and the Stunning Reflections at Kyauk Ka Lat Pagoda
As if everything that my eyes had witnessed since I started the first of my 2-day Hpa-An itinerary hadn’t been enough, when I walked closer to the lake, I was mesmerized by the perfect reflection of Mount Zwegabin on the water’s surface. The lake’s mirror-like surface was a truly unforgettable sight and added a sense of tranquility to the whole experience. To give you an idea of how beautiful that scene was, the image that you can see below has been my laptop’s background wallpaper ever since 😁
Looking up at the highest peak of Mount Zwegabin, I spotted a structure resembling a pagoda or antenna. This marked my next adventure, as I planned to hike to the summit the following day. Before leaving, I took my time, enjoying the perfect reflection and the breathtaking beauty of this special place.
Kaw Ka Thaung Cave: A Unique Stop on Your 2-Day Hpa-An Itinerary
At around 16:00, I found myself heading to yet another captivating cave in the stunning countryside of Hpa-An. It’s no surprise that this region is known for its plethora of caves, each with its own distinct charm. Kaw Ka Thaung Cave, a popular spot for locals and travellers alike, was the next stop on my 2-day Hpa-An itinerary. Like many of the places I had visited earlier in the day, entry to this cave was completely free, making it an accessible and enjoyable stop for anyone exploring the area.
Kaw Ka Thaung Cave’s Row of 145 monks
I parked my scooter just outside the entrance, flanked by a pair of majestic leogryphs—a recurring symbol I’d noticed throughout my 3 weeks in Myanmar. The pathway leading to Kaw Ka Thaung Cave was nothing short of remarkable, lined with a row of 145 statues of monks. Of course, I couldn’t resist counting them myself! This unique procession set the tone for what was to come, adding an air of serenity and anticipation to the experience. While Kaw Ka Thaung Cave may not boast the grandeur of some other caves near Hpa-An, it has a charm of its own that draws many local visitors. Despite its popularity, the cave wasn’t overly crowded during my visit, which made exploring it a peaceful experience.

The cave was completely different from the others I had seen so far. It looked way newer and it was really colorful (maybe a little too much). There were some local tourists but it wasn’t super crowded so I could walk around easily. There were some Buddha statues, small shrines, other smaller caves and even some small pools!
A Serendipitous Encounter at Kaw Ka Thaung Cave
As I wandered through the cave, something—or rather someone—caught my eye. To my astonishment, it was Clara and Lea! If you’ve been following my journey, you’ll remember they were the first people I met during my 2 days in Yangon. We had crossed paths at Sule Pagoda, Shwedagon Pagoda, and even the Yangon Circular Train. And now, here they were in Hpa-An!
We caught up for a bit, and they told me about their day exploring the countryside highlights of Hpa-An. They had just returned from Saddan Cave, raving about how impressive it was. I had been debating whether to make Saddan Cave my last stop for the day, and their glowing recommendation sealed the deal for me. With closing time fast approaching, I hurriedly said goodbye, promising to meet them later for dinner.

I had been walking for around 20 minutes when… I saw the light. Literally. Emerging from the cave, you’ll be greeted by a tranquil hidden lake surrounded by lush greenery and colorful boats. To return to the entrance, you have the option of walking back through the cave or taking a scenic boat ride across the lake for 6000 MMK. Gliding through the shallow waters, surrounded by lush vegetation and limestone cliffs, is an experience you won’t want to miss.

- Seasonal Availability: Saddan Cave is typically open from November to April, so plan your 2-day Hpa-An itinerary accordingly.
- Best Time to Visit: Plan your visit early in the morning or late in the afternoon for fewer crowds and cooler temperatures.
- What to Pack: Carry a water bottle, a scarf for covering your shoulders, and a light bag for your shoes, as you’ll need to take them off before entering. Also, if you take the boat, you’ll be exiting Saddan Cave not from where you entered, so, they’ll come in really handy 🙂

After a refreshing shower at Thanlwin Pyar Guesthouse, I joined Clara and Lea for a tuk-tuk ride to the vibrant Hpa-An Night Market. Situated by the serene Kan Thar Yar Lake, this bustling market is a must-visit during any 2-day Hpa-An itinerary. Open from 17:00 to midnight, it boasts nearly 100 food stalls offering a mix of Burmese street food and Thai delicacies.

A Memorable Ride Back After Hpa-An Night Market Adventures
Unable to find a tuk-tuk back to our guesthouse, I decided to ask a local for help. True to the warm hospitality of Myanmar’s people, a friendly stranger offered to give us a ride. Though the girls hesitated at first, he returned moments later with a car and safely dropped us off. This gesture of kindness was a heart-warming end to an unforgettable day.

As the first day of my 2-day adventure in Hpa-An came to an end, I couldn’t help but marvel at the surreal landscapes, rich culture, and incredible kindness I encountered. Day 2 in Hpa-An: Immersing in Local Culture and Natural Beauty
Starting Day 2 of My 2-Day Hpa-An Itinerary
After waking up at around 08:30, I indulged in another delicious breakfast, ready to make the most of my second and final day in Hpa-An. Knowing this was my last chance to pick up a quintessential souvenir before heading home, I decided to go in search of something uniquely Burmese: the iconic conical hat, often seen throughout Southeast Asia but especially charming in Myanmar.
Exploring Hpa-An’s Market
To find the perfect hat, I headed to Hpa-An’s bustling market—a lively maze of stalls selling everything from clothing and souvenirs to fresh produce and local snacks. The market was vibrant and busy, a perfect spot to observe locals going about their day and to immerse myself in the daily life of Hpa-An.
After wandering through the stalls, I came across a kind lady crafting and painting the traditional Burmese hats. Her creations, with their bright colours and intricate designs, immediately caught my eye. I selected a blue and green hat, paid her a modest price, and left feeling thrilled with my unique purchase. But little did I know, my journey through Hpa-An’s market wasn’t quite over…
Discovering Lumbini Gardens: Buddha is everywhere
Journey to Mount Zwegabin
After leaving the market, I kickstarted my motorbike—this time, not a scooter but a proper motorbike—and set off towards one of Hpa-An’s most iconic landmarks: Mount Zwegabin. This towering limestone mountain, standing at an impressive 725 meters, is the tallest in the region and a popular trekking destination for both tourists and locals.
Located just 10 km from the center of Hpa-An, Mount Zwegabin is accessible by scooter or motorbike, or you can opt for a local guide or driver to take you there. With its challenging yet rewarding trekking trails and breathtaking views from the summit, it’s a must-visit on any 2-day Hpa-An itinerary.
Strolling Through Lumbini Gardens
I chose to begin my journey at the entrance that takes you through the Lumbini Gardens, also known as Buddha Park. Named after the legendary birthplace of Buddha in Nepal, these “gardens” are less about lush greenery and more about a strikingly unique collection of 1,500 neatly aligned Buddha statues.
Individually, each statue may not be particularly awe-inspiring—some are even slightly weathered—but as you gaze upon the seemingly endless rows of Buddhas, the sheer scale and symmetry of the park create a mesmerizing scene. Driving through the thousands of statues felt surreal, as if I were traveling through a silent procession of monks frozen in time.

Trek to Mount Zwegabin: A Must-Do in Any 2-Day Hpa-An Itinerary
Mount Zwegabin is a must-visit destination in Hpa-An, offering a rewarding trek filled with stunning landscapes and cultural insights. Standing at 725 meters, it’s the tallest limestone mountain in the region, drawing tourists and locals alike. Whether you’re seeking a physical challenge, a spiritual experience, or breathtaking views, this trek has something for everyone. Here’s a detailed account of my journey to Mount Zwegabin’s summit.
Why Trek Mount Zwegabin?
The trek to Mount Zwegabin is popular for several reasons. Many take on the challenge for the spectacular sunrise or sunset views, while some locals see it as a pilgrimage. In the past, tourists could stay overnight at the monastery on the summit, but this is no longer permitted due to a tragic accident. For me, the trek was a mix of adventure, admiration for nature, and a desire to push myself physically.
Starting the Trek: Entrance and First Impressions
After paying the entrance fee (4000 MMK) and parking my motorbike, I prepared to begin the climb. The entrance I chose required crossing Lumbini Gardens, the park with over 1500 Buddha statues I mentioned earlier. Close to the entrance, I noticed construction underway for a cable car, which might one day make the summit accessible for everyone. However, for now, it remains a trekker’s paradise. I initially removed my shoes, assuming it was customary to trek barefoot near sacred areas, but soon realized most locals were wearing shoes. I quickly followed suit, thankful for the added comfort on the steep climb ahead.
The Trail: Steps, Stupas, Scenic Beauty and, Unfortunately, Also Trash
The trek began with an unrelenting series of concrete steps that seemed to go on forever. Some were well-maintained, while others had deteriorated over time, requiring caution. In certain sections, handrails provided extra support, and in others, tree roots served as makeshift steps. Along the way, I passed a beautiful stupa, an early highlight of the trek. Food and beverage stalls near the base were the last signs of civilization before the climb grew steeper and more secluded.
The landscape was absolutely breathtaking, with limestone mountains dominating the horizon. The unique shapes and rugged beauty of these formations felt surreal. The trek wasn’t without its challenges, though, as litter scattered along the trail detracted from the natural beauty. It was disheartening, and I hoped efforts would be made to address this issue in the future.
Not sure if there was any trash bin during the whole trek, but, what can you expect? You are in the middle of a mountain. We don’t need trash bins there but common sense. I’m sure most of the people doing the trek are carrying with them a bag or backpack. Thus, there is no need to throw the trash on the ground but to keep it with you and throw it in the right place back at Hpa-An or wherever you are staying at. I spoke to some locals about it and most of them agreed with me. Unfortunately, the situation wasn’t unique to my 2-day Hpa-An itinerary. Something similar happened to me while riding the Yangon Circular Train. However, it seemed they understood me better here. Some of them even recorded me as I was telling them they needed to learn to respect the environment lol.
Challenges and Rewards of the Climb
The trek was steep and demanding, with the tropical heat and humidity adding to the challenge. At some stages, it reminded me to my trek to Walshs pyramid back in Cairns. Having a spare shirt turned out to be a lifesaver, as I was drenched in sweat within minutes. The occasional glimpse of Kyauk Ka Lat Pagoda in the distance was a delightful surprise. The iconic pagoda perched atop a small limestone rock seemed almost magical from this vantage point, adding to the sense of awe that accompanied the trek.
I met a few tourist and a few locals during my ascent. Beautiful limestone mountains were a constant during the trek. The same went for the uncountable steps and the dry and dusty soil. I encountered workers who were rebuilding the stairs or just trying to improve some parts of the path. They were carrying cement sacks under so much heat, humidity and dust that, somehow, they reminded me to the poor miners at Kawah Ijen, back in Indonesia.
Reaching the Summit of Mount Zwegabin
After approximately an hour and five minutes of climbing, I finally reached the summit. The last few steps led to a platform featuring a large golden stupa, a smaller stupa on the edge, toilets, food and beverage stands, and a monastery, where monks were meditating, cleaning and just carrying out their daily activities.
The views from the top were mesmerizing, offering a panoramic glimpse of Hpa-An’s lush landscapes and limestone mountains. I took some time to meditate, appreciating the serene environment and the sense of accomplishment.
Monkeys roamed the summit area, so I kept my belongings close to avoid any mischievous encounters. After snapping some photos and chatting with fellow trekkers, including a group of Swedish travellers, I began my descent.
Descending Mount Zwegabin
The trek down was quicker but equally challenging. The steep descent put strain on my legs as I worked to maintain control with each step. Back at the base, I changed into another dry shirt and reflected on the incredible experience. Before leaving, I spoke with staff at the ticket office about the trash issue, urging them to promote environmental awareness among visitors. They agreed with a smile 🙂

Trekking Mount Zwegabin was one of the most rewarding experiences of my 2-day Hpa-An itinerary. From the physical challenge to the awe-inspiring views, every moment felt like a step closer to connecting with nature and local culture. Lunch and Chinlone
After an exhilarating morning trek to Mount Zwegabin, I made my way back to Hpa-An to tackle a small issue with my new Burmese hat.
Returning the Burmese Hat
I stopped by the shop where I had purchased my colorful Burmese hat earlier in the day. While I loved its vibrant blue and green design, I quickly realized it wasn’t the right size for me. Apologizing to the kind woman, I offered to let her keep the money, but she insisted on giving it back. Burmese hospitality, once again, left me amazed.
Lunch at Wee Restaurant in Hpa-An
With my stomach growling, I turned to TripAdvisor for recommendations and ended up at Wee Restaurant. The food was delicious, featuring authentic Burmese flavours, but the place was bustling with tourists. While I enjoyed the meal, I was reminded why I prefer local haunts over popular tourist spots—mingling with locals often offers a more genuine experience. If you’re like me and enjoy stepping off the beaten path, you might want to explore some of Hpa-An’s lesser-known eateries.
Discovering Chinlone: Myanmar’s National Sport
As I left the restaurant, I stumbled upon a group of people playing a fascinating game in the middle of the street. If you’ve ever traveled through Southeast Asia, you might recognize the distinctive ball they were using. The game? Chinlone, Myanmar’s traditional national sport.
Chinlone is not competitive; instead, it’s a graceful, cooperative activity. A typical game involves six players forming a circle, with one player at the center. The goal is to keep the ball—a handwoven rattan creation that produces a satisfying “basket-like” sound when struck—from touching the ground. Players pass the ball to each other as creatively as possible, blending skill and artistry in every movement. Watching them play was captivating and offered a glimpse into a cherished aspect of Burmese culture.
So Long, Hpa-An!
After an eventful morning and a delicious lunch, it was time to start wrapping up my Hpa-An adventure. I drove back to Thanlwin Pyar Guesthouse to freshen up before heading to my next destination: Kalaw. Although I no longer had a room, the kind staff let me take a shower and provided a towel for free. This level of hospitality is rare, and it reminded me once again why I had grown so fond of Myanmar and its people.
Waiting for the Bus to Kalaw
I had already booked my bus ticket to Kalaw (25000 MMK) through the hostel reception, but there were still a couple of hours to wait. I took a seat on the hostel terrace and ended up meeting three fellow travellers—a guy from India, another from the US, and Mae, a girl from France. We shared beers and swapped stories, bonding over the common topics of why we were in Myanmar, where we had been, and where we were heading next.
A Sobering Story from the Road
As we talked, Mae became visibly emotional, almost to the point of tears. She shared a tragic story from her recent visit to Hsipaw, a place I was considering for my itinerary. During a trek that included navigating river rapids, the guide asked everyone in the group if they were confident swimmers. They all said yes—but not everyone was truthful.
Tragically, a young traveler from South Korea struggled with the rapids. Though she had a rubber ring, she couldn’t stay afloat. Other travelers managed to combine swimming and the ring to navigate the water, but her situation quickly deteriorated. A fellow traveler jumped in to try to save her, but it was too late.
Mae’s story left us all in stunned silence. Sometimes, it’s easy to forget how fragile life can be. Events like this remind us not only to cherish life but also to be honest about our limits and to prioritize safety in our travels.
Reflection and Farewell to Hpa-An
I spent some more time with the group, sharing laughs and deeper reflections, before it was time to board my bus. Meeting fellow travellers and exchanging stories—whether uplifting or sobering—is one of the most rewarding aspects of travel for me. It reminds me of the shared human experiences that connect us, even in far-flung corners of the world.
